Source – Druginfozone – A study published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology 2006; 96(5): 731-735 suggests that adding oral montelukast to inhaled beta-agonist therapy may be beneficial in acute asthma in pre-school childrenaged (2-5 years)

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel-group study of 51 patients (2-5 years old) experiencing mild to moderate asthma received 4mg of montelukast or placebo in addition to inhaled salbutamol  and were followed up for 4 hours. The researchers’ monitored the pulmonary index score, respiratory rate, and pulse.

The researchers concluded that a 4mg dose of montelukast had the potential to provide additive clinical benefit in mild to moderate acute asthma in pre-school children.

4mg montelukast chewable tablets are licensed for children aged 2 -5 years.
