Source – Pharmaceutical Journal - A new study published online on 11 January 2006 in The Lancet identifies early warning signs for meningococcal sepsis in children and adolescents.

Meningococcal disease is a rapidly progressive childhood infection of global importance.

Data was obtained from surveyed parents and from primary-care records for the course of illness before admission to hospital in 448 children. Researchers found that cold hands and feet, abnormal skin colour (both signs of peripheral circulation) often occurred within the first 12 hours of infection. With classic symptoms (rash, headache, stiff neck, photosensitivity, impaired consciousness) occurring at a later stage (median onset 13 to 22 hours).
